Hospital Background
Ilembula Lutheran Hospital is a heath facility belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT)-Southern Diocese (SD) and started to operate as health post in 1941 and in 1950 started to operate as a Hospital up to now.
From 7th May 2010 the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania through Njombe District Council signed the service agreement with ELCT-Southern Diocese to be Ilembula Council Designated Hospital. Ilembula Lutheran Hospital started to act as Council Designated Hospital since July 2013, where by staff salaries, Medical supplies and equipment are supported by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania through Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
On 25th October 2010 the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. David Mwakyusa, appointed Ilembula Lutheran Hospital as Referral Hospital. From that time, it was one of 9 Referral Hospitals in Tanzania. That means all Hospitals in the surrounding Districts use Ilembula Hospital to referral its patients to.
On 25th September 2015 Ilembula Referral Hospital signed the contract with the Government to be the Council Designated District Hospital of Wanging’ombe. In July, 2021 the contract with Government ended and the Hospital returned to the total diocesan possession.
Ilembula Lutheran Hospital is situated at Ilembula Village, in Ilembula ward, Wanging’ombe Division in Wanging’ombe District at Njombe Region in the southern Highlands of Tanzania. Ilembula lies on altitude of 1,400 meters (4700 ft.) above the seal level. It is 34 degrees East of Greenwich Meridian and 8 degrees south of the Equator.
The Region is crosswise by the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) line and the tarmac road from Dar es Salaam-Tanzania to Lusaka-Zambia Capital city. The road and the railway line provide an easy access to the Region. The estimated population of Njombe Region is 702097. Njombe Regional has four Districts Wanging’ombe, Makete, Ludewa, Njombe District, Njombe Town Council and Makambako Town Council. Wanging’ombe District Council covers an area 3,570 sq.km with 17 wards which is suitable for Agricultural activities and Pastrolism. Wanging’ombe District has approximately 161,816 people living in an area. There are three Hospitals, 4 Health centers and Dispensaries are12.
Ilembula Ward has approximately 32,000 inhabitants. Most of the people are peasants and some small business and workers. Land is used moderately by the peasants who normally grow maize, beans sunflower and groundnuts for their food. There is no classic cash crop produced in the area. With this subsistence sort of farming, excess uncovered land is still available. Rainfall period starts from November to April, ranging from 800-1000mm per annum. The area has only one period of rainfall per year. Nevertheless, it is enough rain for the growth of all food crops produced in this area.
Communication system at Ilembula village comprises road, telephones, mobile phones networks and Internet. Other social services at Ilembula includes Schools, Churches, Mosque, Pipe water, Police station, CRDB Bank and Agents, NMB Agents, M-Pesa, Halo Pesa, Tigo-Pesa, and Airtel Money which results into rapid urbanization of the area and increase in population.
Ilembula Lutheran Hospital is situated along the main road of Dar es Salaam-Mbeya. It lies 5km from the main road, 100 km from Njombe town, 150km from Mbeya town and 200 km from Iringa, therefore apart from serving people of Njombe Region also it serves people from Iringa, Mbeya, Morogoro Regions and other places of Tanzania respectively.
